WHAT DO YOU NEED TO IMPORT YOUR CAR?

WHY IMPORT TO IBIZA?

If you live in Ibiza and drive your car here for longer than 183 days, you are legally obliged to import it. You may also benefit from importing your car to Spain. The road tax or insurance might be lower. If you have a new or relatively new car, you can sometimes claim for a refund on the vehicle tax you have already paid.

WHO CAN IMPORT A CAR TO IBIZA?

If you are a resident here, you must register the car you are driving (in your name) in Spain. Even as a non-resident, you can register your car in Spain, as long as you own a property here or have a long-term rental contract. Please note that if you go back to your country, you might not be able to drive around in your Spanish-registered car for longer than a set amount of time.

THE PROCEDURE FOR IMPORTING TO IBIZA

The import procedure is not the same for every car. It depends on a lot of factors, such as the condition of your car (new or used), when the car was purchased, where the car was purchased, whether it is in the name of a person or company etc.

If your car is not yet in Ibiza, we can organise the transport from your country. After that, the car first of all has to go through the Spanish “ITV” (technical inspection), even if it is new or has just passed the inspection in your country. In the meantime, the road tax and registration tax have to be paid. Then, the car will have to be registered with the Spanish “Tráfico” (traffic authority), which will deliver the vehicle documents.

In the meantime, if necessary, a temporary Spanish number plate (“placa verde”) can be requested, for example if the technical inspection is out-of-date.

Afterwards, the number plates can be made and you will need to insure the car. Car Import Ibiza has selected an insurance company to work with that offers good cover at competitive rates.

Thinking about doing it yourself?

If you have a lot of patience, speak fluent Spanish and are familiar with Spain’s bureaucracy, doing it yourself is certainly also an option.  If not, we recommend you let us take care of it.
